Some examples ...
1. Money and status
2. Some measures are Grades at school, size of house, car, bank balance
3. Other measures are relationships - number of friends, peopel who love you
4. Health & beauty / fitness level
5. Material possesions - toys, gadgets .....
Below is my favourite definition....
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived... this is to have succeeded."
This blog has some of the thoughts about life in general : encompassing parenting , a bit of spritualism and some motivational stuff that I would want to share with all. Some pieces I have written myself (very very few) and whenever I find something interesting I do a copy and paste (I do this most of the time!). Happy Reading :-)

We need to teach our daughter
We need to teach our daughters the difference between a man who flatters her, and a man who compliments her .... a man who spends money on her, and a man who invests in her .... a man who views her as property, and a man who views her properly ..... a man who lusts after her, and a man who loves her ..... a man who believes he is God's gift to women, and a man who remembers a woman was God's gift to man. Move on!!!
A wise man once sat in the audience & cracked a joke. All laughed like crazy.
After a moment he cracked the same joke again and a little less people laughed this time.
He cracked the same joke again & again, When there was no laughter in the crowd, he smiled and said
"When u can't laugh on the same joke again & again, then why do u keep crying over the same thing over and over again.
'Forget the past & move on' and that’s the life

Significance of Namaste!
Once upon a time, there was an ashram in the Himalayas where a great sage and his disciples lived. They all respected their Guru not only for his knowledge, but also for his love and kindness towards all.
Because of his kind nature he often accepted disciples who were spiritually immature. This resulted in silly misunderstandings and quarrels among some of his disciples breaking the peace and tranquility of the hermitage.
One day the Guru was very disturbed to see their immature behavior even after his repeated advice. It saddened his good heart to see his disciples turning into slaves of jealousy and anger. His compassion did not let him throw anyone out of his hermitage. Instead, he sincerely prayed to God to give him a solution. He fasted for many days, and spent the days by himself in meditation and prayer.
After some days of fasting and intense prayers, he had a vision of the Lord. In the vision, God asked him why he was sad. He explained everything and requested Him to come to the ashram and free their minds of jealousy, anger, and desire for power. To his surprise, the Lord immediately agreed and told him that He would come to the ashram on one condition: He would come in disguise as one of the disciples, and nobody would know who was God in disguise. The Guru announced to his disciples about his vision and Bhagavan’s kind decision to come as of his disciples.
The disciples were very happy when they heard about Bhagavan’ plan to come and live with them in disguise. But they did not know who was Bhagavan and everybody was very gentle and considerate to each other thinking that the other disciple might be Bhagavan Himself in disguise. When they lived like that for a few months, peace and tranquility filled their hearts as well as the hermitage.
In their pure minds, they felt the Lord’s blissful presence and they started treating each other, and thinking of each other, as none other than Bhagavan Himself in disguise! The whole ashram was reverberating with blissful positive vibrations emanating from everyone! This great sage and his disciples told their experience to others and inspired them also to respect each other and to pranam to the divinity in every one.
Since then, everybody started greeting each other saying ‘namaste’ with folded hands : namah + te, meaning ‘I bow to That (Divinity) inherent in you. ‘ In Sanskrit the word is namah + te = namaste which means ‘I bow to you’ - my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. The word ‘˜namaha’ can also be literally interpreted as "na ma" (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of reducing one's ego in the presence of another.
Why Namaste:
Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However, there is much more to it than meets the eye. The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet one another with namaste, it means, ˜may our minds meet’, indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love, respect and humility.
Spiritual Significance of Namaste:
The reason why we do namaste has a deeper spiritual significance. It recognizes the belief that the life force, the divinity, the Self or the God in me is the same in all. Acknowledging this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we honor the god in the person we meet.
May the Lord help us also to see His divinity in everybody! Namaste!

I WILL LIVE FOREVER!
I will live forever
By Robert N. Test
The day will come when my body will lie upon a white sheet neatly tucked under four corners of a mattress located in a hospital; busily occupied with the living and the dying. At a certain moment a doctor will determine that my brain has ceased to function and that, for all intents and purposes, my life has stopped.
When that happens, do not attempt to instill artificial life into my body by the use of a machine. And don't call this my deathbed. Let it be called the bed of life, and let my body be taken from it to help others lead fuller lives.
Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise, a baby's face or love in the eyes of a woman.
Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused nothing but endless days of pain.
Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his grandchildren play.
Give my kidneys to the one who depends on a machine to exist from week to week.
Take my bones, every muscle, every fiber and nerve in my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk.
Explore every corner of my brain.
Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that, someday a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against her window.
Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the winds to help the flowers grow.
If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my weakness and all prejudice against my fellow man.
Give my sins to the devil.
Give my soul to God.
If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you do all I have asked, I will live forever.
Robert N. Test, American Poet (1926-1994), was one of the pioneers in promoting organ and tissue donations. In 1976, he wrote an essay titled "To Remember Me." It was first published in The Cincinnati Post and later in Ann Landers' column, as well as in Reader's Digest.

Importance of 3 little words
3 Little Words
Some of the most significant messages people deliver to one another often
I'LL BE THERE -
Come in just three words. When spoken or conveyed, those statements have the
Power to forge new friendships, deepen old ones and restore relationships That have cooled.
The following three word phrases can enrich every relationship:
Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can
Give. When we are truly present for other people, important things happen to
Them and to us. We are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored
Emotionally and spiritually. 'Being there' is at the very, very core of
Civility.
I MISS YOU -
Perhaps more marriages could be salvaged and strengthened if
Couples simply and sincerely said to each other, "I miss you." This powerful
Affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved.
I RESPECT YOU -
Respect is another way of showing love. Respect conveys the
Feeling that another person is a true equal. It is a powerful way to affirm
The importance of a relationship.
MAYBE YOU'RE RIGHT -
This phrase is highly effective in diffusing an
Argument and restoring frayed emotions. The flip side of "maybe you're
Right" is the humility of admitting "maybe I'm wrong."
PLEASE FORGIVE ME -
Many broken relationships could be restored and healed
If people would admit their mistakes and ask for forgiveness. All of us are
Vulnerable to faults, foibles and failures. A man should never be ashamed to
Own up to he has been in the wrong, which is by saying, in other words, that
He is wiser today than he was yesterday.
I THANK YOU -
Gratitude is an exquisite form of courtesy. People who enjoy
The companionship of good, close friends are those who don't take dailycircle of friendsattitude of gratitude.
Courtesies for granted. They are quick to thank their friends for their many
Expressions of kindness. On the other hand, people whose

COUNT ON ME -
"A friend is one who walks in when others walk out." "Loyalty
Is an essential ingredient for true friendship; it is the emotional glue
That bonds people. Those who are rich in their relationships tend to be
Steady and true friends. When troubles come, a good friend is there,
Indicating "you can count on me."
LET ME HELP -
The best of friends see a need and try to fill it. When they
Spot a hurt they do what they can to heal it. Without being asked, they
Pitch in and help.
I UNDERSTAND YOU -
People become closer and enjoy each other more if they
Feel the other person accepts and understands them. Letting others know in
So many little ways that you understand him or her is one of the most
Powerful tools for healing your relationship.
GO FOR IT -
Some of your friends may be non-conformists, have unique
Projects and unusual hobbies. Support them in pursuing their interests.
Rather than urging your loved ones to conform, encourage their uniqueness -
Everyone has dreams that no one else has.
I suppose the 3 little words that you were expecting to see have to be

The tripple filter test!
In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in high esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"
"Hold on a minute," Socrates replied. "Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be good idea to take a moment and filter what you’re going to say. That’s why I call it the triple filter test. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"
"Well, no," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and…"
"All right," said Socrates. "So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now, let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"
"Umm, no, on the contrary…"
"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about my friend, but you’re not certain it’s true. You may still pass the test though, because there’s one filter left—the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really."
"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?

What you represent
Often our clothes, behaviour, words represent who we are, but we sometimes forget what we are representing.
When we are with someone who know us , our family , our country , with them how we dress, how we act, what we say usually represents just us as a person.
When we are among people who know us & very little about our family, we then our representing ourselves and our family.
And when we are in a situation where others know very little about our family and even less about our country, then in those circumstances we are representing not just ourself as a person, but we represent our family & our country.
It's an old saying in my country - Do nothing that brings dishonour to your country or your family and you will always gain honour for self, family & country!

Its all in the attitude!!!!
ATTITUDE
1) Heavy rains remind us of challenges in life. Never ask for a lighter rain.
Just pray for a better umbrella.
That is attitude.
2) When flood comes, fish eat ants & when flood recedes, ants eat fish.
Only time matters. Just hold on,
God gives opportunity to everyone!
3) Some people always throw stones in your path. It depends on you what you make with them,Wall or Bridge?
Remember you are the architect of your life.
4) Every problem has (“n”+1) solutions,
where “n” is the number of solutions that you have tried
and “1” is that you have not tried. That's life.
5) It's not important
to hold all the good cards in life.
But it's important how well you play
the cards which you hold.
6) Often when we lose all hope
& think this is the end,
God smiles from above and says, relax dear
its just a bend. Not the end.
Have Faith and have a successful life.
7) One of the basic differences
between God and human is,
God gives, gives and forgives.
Human gets, gets, gets and forgets.
Be thankful in life!

most practical advice to living a long and healthy life can be found in our
Vedas.
1. Eat mostly plants.
(Have meat as a side dish instead of the main dish)
2. Put family first.
(In times of Test, Family is the Best)
3. Take a walk. Get outdoors
(Our legs are meant to move us, so move)
4. Reduce and manage stress.
(It's not stress that kills us, it is our reaction to it)
5. Have a purpose.
(Be excited when you wake up each morning)
6. Be grateful.
(Appreciate what you got and you will get more)
7. Have fun.
(Do things that you enjoy)
8. Maintain a healthy body weight
(Move more, eat less)
9. Love and laugh
(Preferably both at the same time)
10. Snack on nuts
(The most nutrient dense food in the world)
11. Give something back.
(If you want to get, you have to give)
12. Eat a large breakfast. A medium lunch & a small dinner.
(King's B'fast, Prince's Lunch, Pauper's Dinner)
13. *Drink plenty of water. *(* *If you pass urine 4 times in 24hrs and it
is pale yellow in colour: it means that u are consuming sufficient water)*
*
14. Sleep when it's dark.
(There is a reason why we can't see in the dark)
15. Learn new things.

might have, should have)

Advice for girls (dressing up)
When Muhammad Ali's daughters arrived at his home wearing clothes that were not modest. Here is the story as told by one of his daughters:
When we finally arrived, the chauffeur escorted my younger sister, Laila, and me up to my father's suite. As usual, he was hiding behind the door waiting to scare us. We exchanged many hugs and kisses as we could possibly give in one day.
My father took a good look at us. Then he sat me down on his lap and said something that I will never forget.
He looked me straight in the eyes and said, "Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to.
Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered and protected.
Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell.
Where do you find gold? Way down in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock.
You've got to work hard to get to them."
He looked at me with serious eyes. "Your body is sacred. You're far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too."

Pass the biscuits
PASS THE BISCUITS
When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every
now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made
breakfast after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago,
my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage, and extremely burned biscuits in
front of my dad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all
my dad did was reach for his Biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me how my
day was at school.
I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember hearing
my mom apologize to my dad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never
forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned biscuits."
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I asked him if he
really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said,
"Your momma put in a long hard day at work today and she's real tired.
And besides... a burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!"
You know, life is full of imperfect things... and imperfect people. I'm
not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and
anniversaries just like everyone else. What I've learned over the years
is that learning to accept each others faults and choosing to celebrate
each others differences, is one of the most important keys to creating a
healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.
So...please pass me a biscuit. And yes, the burned one will do just
fine!
And please pass this along to someone who has enriched your life... I
just did!
Life is too short to wake up with regrets...
Love the people who treat you right and forget about the ones who don't.
ENJOY LIFE NOW - IT HAS AN EXPIRY DATE!!

Tennis & Economics ( copy & paste)
We seemed to want to do everything but listen to Mrs Muralidhar who was trying her utmost to teach them the basic tenets of Macro Economics. After twenty minutes of unfruitful lecturing, she found her voice going hoarse and a splitting headache surfacing. She noticed that some of the students were repeatedly staring out of the window and at the sports centre. A lawn tennis match was going on and a lot of cheering could be heard.
All of a sudden, Mrs Muralidhar shut her book and said, "That seems to be a very interesting match. Shall we all go down and watch it?" The students looked at her wide-eyed, not quite sure that they had heard correctly. She repeated, "Shall we all go down and watch the match?" All of them; boys and girls, sprang up from their seats and said, "Wow! Let's go!" They ran down the stairs and into the sports centre. Soon they were all a part of the cheering crowd. The match was a gripping one. One after the other, the players gave shot after shot. Each player had her own fan following and friends. Soon the match was over and the crowd dispersed.
The following day, Mrs Muralidhar entered the class. For once, the students smiled at her. She said, "So, class! Did you enjoy the match yesterday?" All of them chorused, "Yes, Ma'am!" She said, "Do you know what makes the match go on?" The youngsters did not understand what she was asking. "Do you know, what is the most important thing for a match to take place?" Someone said, "A tennis court!" Another voice said, "Sports man spirit;" yet another said, "Talent and commitment." "No," said the teacher, shaking her head. "The most important thing for a match is that there should be two players. They have to give back one for one. If either of the players does not take the shot and does not respond to the shot, the match cannot go on. How can one player alone, play a match?" The students nodded.
Mrs Muralidhar said, "Today, we are going to play Antakshari. I am not in the mood to teach." The students were quite amused and intrigued by her but they felt that it would be fun to play along. It was boys versus girls and the game started. The girls sang a popular hindi number ending with `m' The boys were quick to sing a song from a latest Bollywood film. The game went on. Each team was trying to prove its mettle. Soon it was time for the class to be over and much to everyone's disappointment, the game came to an abrupt end. The teacher left.
Interestingly, after college was over, the game picked up again in the ground and went on for hours. The next day, Mrs Muralidhar entered and found the class to be very receptive. She said, "Friends, my last two classes with you have been very exciting and enjoyable. That was so because each one of you was eager to participate. Economics is basically a dry subject. Teaching is akin to a tennis match or a game of Antakshari. I keep giving my best shot but I get no response from you. I sing my song, but I get nothing in return. What I want to tell you is that if you do not pay attention to what I speak, this match of Economics cannot go on. Think of it as Tennis or Antakshari or Economics, but unless you are physically and mentally here and actively participating, the match ends here and now!"
Silence reigned in the class. A few minutes later the teacher said, "So, should we start the match, or shall we call it quits?" Simply and surely they said, "Start the match, Ma'am." Well many Eco-matches were played in that class over that academic year.
The series ended with the end of B.Com 1st Year. But the story does not end here.
Forty two years later an old Mrs Muralidhar, opened a packet delivered to her by courier. Her wrinkled and aged fingers opened it to find a book, "Macro-Economics made easy" by G. M. Lamba. There was a card jutting out of the book. She opened the book at the page at which it had been flagged, to find herself staring at the `Dedication' page. It read:
Dedicated to my Economics teacher, Mrs Isha Muralidhar, who taught me to play the tennis match in the economics class, each day ...."
Her trembling hands picked up the card that had fallen into her lap and read ... "Ma'am, this book is ... because you were ... Thank you for mentoring me... Gokul Mohan Lamba."
Teaching is not just rattling off information to a disinterested bunch of listeners. Teaching can be magical if only the teacher is really involved in it. After the parents, the teachers are the ones who leave the most lasting impressions on young minds.

Be a reason for a smile to be born
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.
That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were.
The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?"
The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way." I wrote:
"Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."
Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people
that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?
Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile.
Face your past without regret.
Handle your present with confidence.
Prepare for the future without fear.
Keep the faith and drop the fear.
The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling, And even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason
behind it!!!

Letter from a Father to a son
Beautiful letter written by a father.
Following is a letter to his son from a renown Hong Kong TV broadcaster cum Child Psychologist. The words are actually applicable to all of us, young or old, children or parents.!
I am writing this to you because of 3 reasons
1. Life, fortune and mishaps are unpredictable, nobody knows how long he lives. Some words are better said early.
2. I am your father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will.
3. What is written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save you a lot of unnecessary heartaches.
Remember the following as you go through life
1. Do not bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I. To those who are good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and ALSO you have to be cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move. When a person is good to you, it does not mean he really likes you. You have to be careful, don't hastily regard him as a real friend.
2. No one is indispensable, nothing in the world that you must possess. Once you understand this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people around you don't want you anymore, or when you lose what/who you love most.
3. Life is short. When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that life is leaving you. The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy life.
4. Love is but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and with one's mood. If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will wash away your aches and sadness. Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness of love, and don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love.
5. A lot of successful people did not receive a good education, that does not mean that you can be successful by not studying hard! Whatever knowledge you gain is your weapon in life. One can go from rags to riches, but one has to start from some rags!
6. I do not expect you to financially support me when I am old, neither would I financially support you for whole life. My responsibility as a supporter ends when you are grown up. After that, you decide whether you want to travel in a public transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor.
7. You honour your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to people, but don't expect people to be good to you. If you don't understand this, you would end up with unnecessary troubles.
8. I have bought lotteries for umpteen years, but I never strike any prize. That shows if you want to be rich, you have to work hard! There is no free lunch!
9. No matter how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have together. We do not know if we would meet again in our next life.

Value of time!
To realize
The value of a sister/brother
Ask someone
Who doesn't have one.
To realize
The value of ten years:
Ask a newly
Divorced couple.
To realize
The value of four years:
Ask a graduate.
To realize
The value of one year:
Ask a student who
Has failed a final exam.
To realize
The value of nine months:
Ask a mother who gave birth to a stillborn.
To realize
The value of one month:
Ask a mother
Who has given birth to
A premature baby..
To realize
The value of one week:
Ask an editor of a weekly newspaper.
To realize
The value of one minute:
Ask a person
Who has missed the train, bus or plane.
To realize
The value of one second:
Ask a person
Who has survived an accident
To realize
The value of one tenth of a second:
Ask a person
Who has lost the Olympic Gold
Time waits for no one..
Treasure every moment you have.
You will treasure it even more when
You can share it with someone special.
To realize the value of a friend or family member:
Ask someone who has lost one.
Remember....
Hold on tight to the ones you love!
